You may not see us, but we see everything about you.
Who are we?
We are Nova Scotia’s Medical Lab technologists (MLT) working 24/7/365 days per year in a secured area of your hospital. There are more than 850 of us. We are the 4th largest health care profession, generating millions of lab results each year for you and your doctor. The public rarely sees us, because we have limited interaction with the public, explaining why many people don’t know who we are.
What is our job?
MLT’s perform many different jobs such as the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment, to analyze the chemical content of body fluids, and test for drug levels in the blood (to show how a patient is responding to treatment). We match blood and platelets for your transfusion, we also look for bacteria, parasites or viruses that cause infections. We perform cell counts and look for abnormal cells in blood and body fluids and molecular and DNA analysis. We use microscopes, and other complicated laboratory equipment. Our results are sent to your doctor and up to 70% of these results we provide are used by your doctor to help in your treatment or diagnosis.
How can you help?
Over the next 4 years over 40% of us are going to retire. This means there will be less medical lab technologists working, which may mean longer wait times for your results for diagnosing and treatment by your doctor.
