Student Application Requirements for Licensure in Nova Scotia  2007:

The process for MLT Students Obtaining a Nova Scotia MLT position in 2007:

1.    The Student will be required to complete their current Approved MLT program (the Program needs to be approved or in the process of being approved by the Canadian Medical Association) prior to applying to the NSCMLT.  Individuals are required to fill out the NSCMLT Initial Registration Form found on our website (www.nscmlt.org and found under Licensing).

2.    If the student applies to the NSCMLT prior to completing their approved MLT program than they are required to submit a letter on official letterhead from the MLT Program Director indicating a) this student is in the process of completing the MLT program and b) when confirmation of successful completion of the approved MLT program will be known and c) that the Student will be challenging the February or June CSMLS examination(s). The student will then be required to submit confirmation of successful completion of the approved MLT program to the NSCMLT as soon as it becomes available. This result is known prior to the February or June setting of the Certification exam- therefore the NSCMLT would expect to be notified by the student prior to the February or June CSMLS examination setting.

3.    Students are required to submit the following documents with the Completed NSCMLT Initial Registration form:

a)    copy of their birth certificate or passport,

b)    copy of current CSMLS Affiliate* membership card (e.g. the student requires to hold current CSMLS Affiliate* membership indicating Professional Liability Insurance-PLI),

c)     copy of MLT Job Description signed off by the employer,

d)    Confirmation of Completed approved MLT program and indication from the MLT Program Director that the individual will be challenging the February or June CSMLS examination(s) – please see #2 if the individual applies prior to completing the program,

e)    Fee: $225.00 in cheque or money order - no post-dating please.

4.    Upon receipt of this information and fee, the individual will be issued a Temporary Licence that will be effective until April 10, 2007 (for those who write the February setting of the CSMLS Certification Examination) or September 10, 2007 (for those who write the June setting of the CSMLS Certification Examination). The individual is required to submit to the College by, either April 10, 2007 or September 10, 2007, a) confirmation of CSMLS Certification and b) confirmation of 2007 PLI.  If the individual is not successful in obtaining Certification on the first writing of the CSMLS Certification examinations then they MUST notify the NSCMLT regarding this issue as the Temporary Licence will be revoked. Once the two items are received by the appropriate date the individual’s status will be changed to Practising. Failure to submit confirmation of CSMLS certification and or PLI without a valid reason by the appropriate date will also result in revocation of the Temporary Licence. An individual cannot practice MLT without a Practising or Temporary licence.

Facts: Upon confirmation of certification, CSMLS also issues the individual a form for Active membership. It is the individual's responsibility to fill this out and return to CSMLS so the Active membership will be issued by either May 1, 2007 or September 10, 2007.  PLI coverage associated with CSMLS student membership is only in force during the student's clinical placement, therefore the new graduate is required to obtain CSMLS Active membership with PLI within the time frame stated by the NSCMLT. The Temporary status can then be changed to Practising.

*On April 18th, 2007, it was brought to our attention (by CSMLS) students, wishing to practice as a MLT prior to receiving their CSMLS certification exam results, are required to hold an Affiliate CSMLS membership.  This enables the students to have the required PLI coverage until they are able obtain an Active CSMLS membership.
