The Board Responsibilities
The Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT) Board establishes the regulatory framework for the Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) profession. This involves setting the organization’s goals, objectives, and policies in accordance with the governing legislation.
The Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT) Board is responsible for the following functions:
Act in the interest of public safety in regard to medical laboratory technology
Prescribe the qualifications required for the scope of practice within the medical laboratory technology profession and monitor, and ensure educational institutions and courses of studies or programs are accredited
Authorize the registration of combined laboratory and xray technologists MLTs, medical laboratory assistants and medical laboratory technologists under the Act and regulations, and to maintain a register
Consider applications for annual practising registrations
Receive and act upon information from health professionals, employers, and the public about the competence of MLPs registered with NSCMLT
Notify employers, NS Department of Health that the practice of a registered MLP may pose a risk of harm to the public
Set standards of clinical competence, cultural and ethical conduct
Promote public awareness of the responsibilities of the College
Exercise and perform any other functions, powers, and duties that are conferred or imposed on it by or under the Act or any other enactment
