MLA In Training (Student)
Individuals aspiring to become MLA’s must possess the fundamental knowledge necessary for professional practice. These requirements apply to all students enrolled in an out-of-province online MLA/MLT program seeking a clinical practicum placement within NS, regardless of their intentions to pursue employment at the time.
Therefore the prerequisites for obtaining a provisional license, will include the following and will apply to all applicants.
- Successful completion of all five theory courses (official letter from Program that this has been completed)
- Proof of Professional Liability Insurance of $2,000,000
- Proposed employer's intent to hire letter (if applicable)
- Completed Acknowledgement of Supervision form
- Evidence of NSCMLT English language requirements (refer to the English Language Proficiency policy)
- Canadian government issued photo identification (Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, proof of landed immigrant resident status, or copy of a valid work permit)
- Copy of criminal records check (CRC)/ vulnerable sector check (VSC)
- Provide clinical placement dates
All students enrolled in online MLA/MLT programs who do not have faculty representation in Nova Scotia are required to hold a Provisional Licence with the NSCMLT while completing clinical placements. Upon successful completion of the approved national entry-to-practice examination, the Provisional Licence will be converted to an Active Practising Licence at no additional cost.
NSCMLT may issue a provisional license for the MLA in Training to complete their clinical placement until they write the next available MLA national entry to practice exam if all other requirements are met.
