Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professional Regulators (CAMLPR)
ABOUT CAMLPR AND NATIONAL ASSESSMENT SERVICES
What is CAMLPR?
The Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) is a national alliance of provincial medical laboratory professional regulators in Canada.
CAMLPR supports its members by delivering shared, national assessment and examination services that help ensure consistent, fair, and transparent evaluation of applicants across jurisdictions.
CAMLPR does not grant registration or licensure. Decisions about registration and certificates of practice are made solely by the provincial regulator.
CAMLPR Services
CAMLPR delivers the following national assessment and examination services:
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) evaluates an applicant’s education, training, and professional experience against Canadian competency standards for medical laboratory technology.
The PLA is primarily used for internationally educated applicants and helps identify:
- Whether an applicant’s competencies align with Canadian standards
- Any learning or assessment requirements that may be needed
PLA outcomes support the registration process but do not guarantee eligibility for registration with a provincial regulator.

Fields-of-Practice Competency Exams
CAMLPR administers Fields-of-Practice Competency Exams, which assess entry-to-practice competencies in specific areas of medical laboratory technology.
These exams:
- Are aligned with national competency standards
- Form part of the broader assessment pathway for some applicants
- Are used by provincial regulators as one component of registration assessment
Successful completion of an exam does not by itself result in registration.
Exam information, schedules, and policies are maintained by CAMLPR at:
Other National Services
Depending on an applicant’s pathway, CAMLPR may also support:
- Education or learning plan development
- National application and assessment processes
- Credential assessment coordination
Details of all current services are available on the CAMLPR website.
Relationship Between CAMLPR and Provincial Regulators
CAMLPR and provincial regulators have distinct but complementary roles in the registration process.
The provincial regulator:
- Determines eligibility for registration
- Establishes registration requirements
- Issues certificates of practice
- Makes all final registration decisions
Applicants may be required to complete both CAMLPR assessments and province-specific requirements as part of the registration process.
How the Process Generally Works
While pathways vary by applicant and jurisdiction, the process typically includes:
- Completing required assessments or exams through CAMLPR (if applicable)
- Meeting any additional learning or assessment requirements
- Applying to the provincial regulator for registration
- Satisfying province-specific registration requirements
Applicants should consult both CAMLPR and the provincial regulator for accurate, up-to-date information.
Professional Liability Insurance (PLI)
Applicants seeking registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Canada are required, in most jurisdictions, to maintain Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) that meets provincial regulatory requirements.
PLI requirements are established and enforced by provincial regulators and form part of the registration process. Applicants are responsible for ensuring they obtain and maintain appropriate coverage in accordance with the requirements of the province in which they seek registration.
Information about PLI requirements and coverage considerations is available on the CAMLPR website:
